Wantirna South robots take on the world

The Federal Member for Aston, the Hon Alan Tudge MP, last week presented an Australian flag to two Wantirna South schoolchildren who will represent Australia at the VEX Robotics World Championships in the United States next month.

Yohan Perera, age 12, and Shanna Alice, age 10, are part of a five-person team that will travel to Anaheim, California in April to represent Australia at the VEX Robotics Championships.

The Championships in the United States are a culmination of 400 worldwide competitions where teams of children design, build and operate small robots to complete various tasks and then compete against each other to test their robots. This is the first year that Australia is taking part in the World Championships.

“I was proud to present the Australian flag to Yohan and Shanna to proudly fly for the country when they compete in the United States,” said Mr Tudge.

“It is remarkable that these kids can design and build these complex robots and then compete against likeminded children from around the world.”

Over 20,000 children will be present at the World Championships, with teams from 26 countries competing to see which team has the world’s best robot.

“With sponsors including NASA, Chevron and Northrop Grumman, this is no small competition and our Australian team will certainly be up there with the very best in the world,” said Mr Tudge.

“Good luck to Yohan, Shanna and the entire Australian team.”
