Reducing Small Business Compliance Burden

07-February-2012

Alan Tudge MP, Federal Member for Aston, has called on the Gillard government to reduce small business red tape whilst speaking in the Parliament this week.

Mr Tudge said, “The Coalition understands two things in relation to small business. The first is that small business is indeed the backbone of our economy and the second being that red tape is the bane of them.

“The Gillard government has now imposed an incredible 12,835 pieces of new red tape regulations on small business. While they have done so, they have only removed 58 regulations bringing the total number of new regulations that small businesses have to comply with back to 12,777 since 2007.

Mr Tudge’s speech was made in reference to the Excise Amendment (Reducing Business Compliance Burden) Bill 2011.

Whilst supporting the measures being introduced in the Bill, Mr Tudge said, “I cannot stress enough that there remains a long, long, long way to go if this government is really serious about reducing red tape.

“Less red tape for small business means less paperwork, higher profits, boosted sales and more time for people to spend with their families.

“We also know that red tape and extra paperwork stifles business activity, stifles entrepreneurship and stifles innovation. Indeed, in many cases it prevents new businesses from starting,” Mr Tudge said.
