Sheri Smith wins Aston Shield at Templeton Primary
14-November-2011
Federal Member for Aston, Alan Tudge MP, presented the first Aston Shield of 2011 to Sheri Smith of Templeton Primary School in Wantirna last week.
The Aston Shield is awarded annually to students who have demonstrated good citizenship for their school and local community. Mr Tudge presents the Aston Shield to a student from each school in his electorate.
Presenting the award, Mr Tudge said Sheri was an outstanding contributor to both the school and her community. “Sheri is a member of the Girl Guides. She raised money for the Walkathon, and has donated money to various charities. She has worked with the World’s Biggest Morning Tea and made toiletry bags for the Salvation Army. She has participated in the Red Cross Door Knock Appeal and Clean Up Australia. She has also donated clothes to the homeless and the Good Samaritan Purse Shoe Box Appeal.
“Sheri is a House Captain at Templeton Primary School and she always sets a wonderful example to her peers and younger students,” Mr Tudge said.
The Aston Shield is named in honour of Tilly Aston who was a remarkable Australian who did so much to advance the rights of blind and vision-impaired people.
Mr Tudge said that “it is a great honour to be the Member of the Federal Electorate named after Tilly. And it is fitting that there be an award given to a student who has demonstrated many of the characteristics that Tilly possessed, particularly those of helping others, a commitment to service and being a good role model.”
